It’s been a while since we’ve seen Harry Potter on the big screen. Sure, we’ve had the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play and successful Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them spin-off series, but it isn’t the same.
It’s tough to say if this new announcement will fill that void, but even if it doesn’t, it creates (and fills) another new void: in the form of the long-awaited back story of Voldemort, Voldemort: Origins of the Heir.
Voldemort: Origins of the Heir depicts the story of Tom Riddle’s rise to power. The official website states “We [the creators]wondered:
“What made Tom Riddle become Voldemort? What happened in those years, and what really went down at Hogwarts when he came back? There are some clues in the books which have not been transposed at all in the movies, but a lot goes unspoken. This is the story we want to tell: the rise of the Dark Lord before Harry Potter and his first demise.”
As an unofficial prequel, none of the film’s content will be considered canon and it won’t see a theatrical release. Instead, the film will be available for free on Youtube!
No release date for Voldemort: Origins of the Heir has been announced and the film remains in post-production.
