Ending months of speculation and fan casting, Pottermore and Warner Bros. today announced that they’ve officially cast young Dumbledore: Jude Law!
The actor is a Hollywood veteran, having starred in dozens of films (and many blockbusters) throughout his decade-spanning career. He’s perhaps best known for his roles in The Talented Mr. Ripley, Alfie, Spy, and the Sherlock Holmes series co-staring Robert Downey Jr.
Harry Potter fans have been clamoring to learn more about the character since his tease in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was clear that with Grindelwald captured, the franchise would be headed back to Europe, setting up for the villain’s showdown with none other than the Wizarding World’s most famous good wizard: Albus Dumbledore!
Pottermore shed some light on what we can expect from Dumbledore in the second Fantastic Beasts film:
[Fantastic Beasts 2] will show Dumbledore decades before he became Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
At this point in the story he is the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor and a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald – the Dark wizard we met in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, played by Johnny Depp.
We’ve known since late last year that Dumbledore would play a central role in the sequel. Director David Yates teased the scenes J.K. Rowling had already written for the character, saying:
“The scenes that Jo has written are lovely. The younger Dumbledore is delightful. He’s very mischievous and enormous fun and a bit of a political animal.”
Fantastic Beasts 2, which has yet to announce an official name, recently entered production and is set for a November 2018 release!
