They gave it their all: HBO and the Game of Thrones team tried to reveal the premiere date for season 7 in style, complete with a live stream, block of ice, and flamethrowers. Unfortunately it ended up taking the team two Facebook Live streams, two flamethrowers, and a more than an hour to melt the ice and reveal the premiere date alongside a teaser video (no trailer – yet).
Don’t get us wrong, we aren’t complaining: this is a much more creative way of announcing a new season than the typical press release and blog post. They had great intentions: a cool live stream tying in the show’s themes – ice/winter and fire/dragons – with a date announcement.
Technical difficulties aside, we’re excited to learn that winter is coming in the form of Game of Thrones season 7 on Sunday, July 16 at 9 PM EST! (The show ordinarily airs in April, but winter never came at their filming locations, so production was delayed.)
The teaser, while epic in appearance, is little more than its title: “Season 7 Sigils Tease”. It features an animated look at the various Houses’ sigils in stone as they crumble, with voice-overs from various characters playing throughout.
Perhaps most telling is this haunting line from the teaser:
“Lannister, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell. They’re all just spokes on a wheel. This one’s on top, then that one’s on top, and on and on it spins, crushing those on the ground. I’m not going to stop the wheel. I’m going to break the wheel.”
We don’t know much else about the new season at this point. With the show well ahead of George R.R. Martin’s books and filming under wraps, it’ll be a complete surprise until trailers – and the show itself – come our way.
