Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson cast as Doc Savage in upcoming superhero film of the same name

Looks like another superhero is entering the box office arena: Sony Pictures has officially announced that the long-awaited Doc Savage film is moving ahead with The Rock starring as the titular character!

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black has been working on the project since 2011. He’ll direct and co-write alongside screenwriters Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.

Doc Savage, born Clark Savage Jr. and also known as the Man of Bronze, originally debuted in pulp magazines in the 1930s. His story has continued through radio, film, and comics throughout the years, managing to stay relevant as DC Comics and Marvel continue to grow.

Here’s Doc Savage’s biography courtesy of Wikipedia:

Doc Savage’s real name was Clark Savage, Jr. He was a physician, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and, as revealed in The Polar Treasure, a musician. A team of scientists assembled by his father deliberately trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, a mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices. “He rights wrongs and punishes evildoers.” Dent described the hero as a mix of Sherlock Holmes’ deductive abilities, Tarzan’s outstanding physical abilities, Craig Kennedy’s scientific education, and Abraham Lincoln’s goodness. Dent described Doc Savage as manifesting “Christliness.”

Black and The Rock have a number of projects on their plate before they get to Doc Savage, and Sony Pictures has yet to announce a release date for the film.
