We have a special guest post for you this week. Jennifer Armentrout’s editor, Margo Lipschultz. She talks about White Hot Kiss and what about the book captivated her. This is a great perspective from the eyes of the person who helped bring this book into the world. We hope you enjoy it!
I knew I was head over heels in love with Jennifer L. Armentrout’s WHITE HOT KISS when I completely missed my subway stop while reading it. It was February 2013 and I was on the train on my way to work, my nose pressed to my Kindle as I all but inhaled this story of a seventeen-year-old girl who had one foot in two very different worlds. This manuscript had it all: drama, action, laugh-out-loud humor and phenomenal banter, plot twists you never saw coming…and did I mention the romance? SWOON. By the time I reluctantly tore my eyes off the story, I had ridden the train three stops too far—and had decided that I was absolutely going to acquire this series for Harlequin TEEN to publish.
One of the things I particularly love about WHITE HOT KISS is the utter relatability of its protagonist, Layla Shaw. Sure, she might be half-demon and half-gargoyle, and sure, she might not be able to kiss a boy without sucking the very soul from his body…but on the inside, she’s a mass of feelings and insecurities that teens and adults alike will recognize and appreciate. All Layla wants is for Zayne, her gorgeous and protective lifelong crush, to look at her as something more than a surrogate kid sister. For the traits that separate her from her adoptive family to disappear so she can truly fit in. For acceptance at school, where some people judge her for the people she lives with. For Roth, the hot and mysterious newcomer who claims to know more about her than she knows herself, to leave her alone (or does she?). The world she inhabits is fascinating and unique, but the emotions she feels and the goals she sets are truly universal. And with her unforgettable blend of wit and sincerity, she pulls readers along on a whirlwind of a ride.
A full year has passed since I read WHITE HOT KISS on submission, and I’m so thrilled that now the book is on sale so readers everywhere can discover its magic for themselves. I’m thrilled, too, that the adventure has only just begun: Layla will return in STONE COLD TOUCH this November. I started reading that manuscript the other morning and—you guessed it—I missed my subway stop.
