Someday, I’m really looking forward to covering the news and press releases surrounding Star Wars Episode VII. But I refuse to deal with all the massive rumors the internet generates each day and, since we have absolutely nothing to go on, most of the speculation is getting out of hand too. By May, I expect we’ll actually start getting information, and then we’ll dive in and have so much fun poking at all the facts and see what we can glean from them.
This week though I almost missed a piece of news as I sorted for any actually verified information. While it’s not about VII, it’s still pretty neat. USA Today got a first look and a pretty detailed description of the first new Disney Jedi, Kanan. Debuting in the new animated show, Rebels, this “cowboy Jedi” sounds a lot like the kind of everyman force user we’ve been calling for in the EU. Too many of the Legacy era Jedi feel like a return to the privileged attitudes of the Prequel era. Here’s hoping that Kanan joins the ranks of the Corran Horns and Kyle Katarns of the world.
Rebels takes place 14 years after the last of the movie prequels, 2005’sStar Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, when the evil Emperor enacted “Order 66” to wipe out all the Jedi in the galaxy, sending the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda into hiding.
Since then, Kanan has been on the down-low, too. He keeps his lightsaber under lock and key and brandishes a blaster instead to avoid the attention of the Empire, especially the Inquisitor (a Sith villain) and his Stormtroopers. But Kanan gets his Force-ful groove back with his crew on the spaceship The Ghost and fights back against the imperial menace.
Definitely check out the article’s exclusive video peak. And did I meantion that Kanan’s being voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.? This show is really starting to sound better all the time.
