During my recent sojourn to Atlantic City, NJ for the first ever (but soon to be repeated) HorrorAC Convention, I had the opportunity to meet the world’s most prolific cinematic killer: Kane Hodder. If you’re not aware who Mr. Hodder is, he is an actor, stuntman, and author. He was Jason Vorhees in 4 of the Friday the 13th films plus he played Victor Crowley in the Hatchet films. He has had an amazing career as a stuntman and as a stunt coordinator.
While talking with Mr. Hodder about his films and the convention, I noticed that he had a stack of books on his table. We discussed the book, and I have to say I was intrigued. Michael Aloisi tells Mr. Hodder’s story from when he was a boy to the tragedies in his life to his eventual success.
Kane Hodder brings us his life, the challenges in his life, and the pain of his injuries to the readers. When I talked to him about the book, he told me that this book would make me cry or make me sad. He was right. The challenges this man faced in his career would have made other people give up. His refusal to quit and to return to the field that cause him so much pain is truly inspiring. Below, you can check out the synopsis of the book:
Unmasked documents the unlikely true story of a boy who was taunted and beaten relentlessly by bullies throughout his childhood. Kane only escaped his tormentors when he moved to a tiny island in the South Pacific where he lived for all of his teen years. After living shirtless in a jungle for a while, he headed back to America where he fell in love with doing stunts-only to have his love burn him, literally. For the first time ever, Kane tells the true story of the horrific burn injury that nearly killed him at the start of his career. The entire heart-wrenching, inspirational story of his recovery, the emotional and physical damage it caused, his fight to break back into the industry that almost killed him, and his triumphant rise to become a film legend are told in Kane’s own powerful voice. Take a peek inside the head of the man behind the mask. Be inspired by his triumphant comeback and laugh at his on-set hijinks as you unmask the world’s most prolific, cinematic killer.
This book tells the story, trials, and tribulations of a man who is dedicated to his profession. His career puts him in the path of pain and sorrow, but he overcomes all of this to reach his goal of acting. It is also amazing to see how this horror icon sees his fans and the horror genre (also, how his fans react to him and the crazy things that are sent to him).
All horror fans (especially those who love slasher films) and anyone who appreciates stunt work should check out this book. With Hodder’s dedication to film and stunts, this book details a perseverance, dedication, and support that is rarely seen today. Also, if you ever have a chance to attend a horror convention with Kane Hodder in attendance, you should definitely stop in and get an autograph.
