[SPOILERS] Ichabod Crane and Abbie continue to bring the battle to the supernatural on-goings and creatures that seem to be drawn to Sleepy Hollow like moths to the flame. This weeks monster of the week is the Sandman. You can see the official synopsis below:
Another soldier in the army of evil, the Sandman, seeps into the dreams of the residents of Sleepy Hollow. By infiltrating their minds at night, he tortures them to the brink – all because they, at one time, turned a blind eye to justice. When the Sandman seemingly sets his sights on Abbie, she is forced to begin to face her past – and her institutionalized sister, JENNY (Lyndie Greenwood). With Ichabod by her side, and her life at stake, the duo must try to defeat the Sandman and continue their fight against evil in the all-new “For the Triumph of Evil” episode of SLEEPY HOLLOW airing Monday, Sept. 30
I know I referred to the Sandman as being the monster of the week which may bring to mind such shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel, but I think Sleepy Hollow stands on its legs and is not derivative of the other shows. ‘Monster of the week’ refers to those shows that each show features a new enemy for just that episode. That enemy is typically a stand alone enemy, but in certain case, may be related to a larger plot against the protagonists. Sleepy Hollow is a much tighter show where the creatures are all related to one storyline, with all loose ends being pulled together.
This episode works on the history of Abbie and her sister and how the two of them original became involved with the supernatural or the creature in the woods. This plot has been incorporated with the last two episodes and I can see that it will be included in future episodes. Abbie and her sister’s interaction with the creature has influenced their entire lives and still effects them to this day. Abbie has hid the truth that institutionalized her sister for the last 10 years, and that is what the Sandman is out to punish Abbie for.
Plus, we get to see Ichabod drink and energy drink. Why do we like this stuff?
So, how do you fight the Sandman? You find an Amercian Indian car salesman who has you drink knock out juice and gets you stung by a scorpion in order to send the duo into the Sandman’s realm. There, Abbie is forced to confront her past.
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. The Sandman was an interesting creature that punished all of those who were found wanting in the lists of justice. While Abbie was able to account for herself against the Sandman, redemption with her sister will be a much longer time in coming.
If you are watching, what did you think? And if you aren’t, why not?
