Marvel developing Agent Carter series

With just a few days until the premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel has announced their plans for a new potential series, already in the early stages of development. This series would focus on Agent Peggy Carter’s story after the events of the first Captain America movie, how she ended up working for S.H.I.E.L.D., and the origins of the same organization.

This would be a follow-up to the straight-to-DVD short Marvel One Shot: Agent Carter, which will be coming out next week with the Iron Man 3 DVD and Blue-Ray. Something similar happened with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which only came to be after the short Item 47 from The Avenger‘s DVD. This could be the start of an expansion into the television territory, seeing as Marvel has hinted that this is just one of several future plans.

There are not many details yet about this potential series. One can assume it will be developed with ABC, the company responsible for the current Marvel series. It isn’t known if Louis D’Esposito, the director of the short movie, will also be directing the series, or if Hayley Atwell (The Pillars of the Earth) will be reprising her role as Agent Carter. At this year Comic-Con, when asked if she would appear in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. she answered “well, if the scripts are good.”

What do you think? Can this TV show work without Hayley Atwell as the lead? I think it’s a good thing Marvel is giving attention to its secondary characters, and a female one at that. This would also be a period drama, another aspect of the Marvel universe that would be interesting to explore.

In the meanwhile I leave you with the trailer for Marvel One Shot: Agent Carter, coming out on September 24, the same day that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres.
