Paul Giamatti recently sat down with MTV news during the Toronto International Film Festival and, despite being there to promote Parkland, the actor was asked about his role as the villain Aleksei Sytsevich, also known as The Rhino, in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The actor had several comments to make about the film, revealing that he is one of many villains in the second Spider-Man installment, and theorizing with the interviewer on what that could mean for the potential inclusion of the Sinister Six in Spider-Man 2 and the Spider-Man universe.
His first comments touched on the Rhino’s particular role in the film and how the Rhino’s flamboyant comic book costume will translate onto the big screen:
“In the comic books of old, he had this suit on that made him look like a rhinoceros, and it made him super strong. If there was a bank vault he would just run right through it. Butt through it with his head. And he was not very smart.
And I have a particular kind of suit, but I don’t think I’m supposed to talk about it. He’s a Russian mobster. Russians are always good villains. I have an ability to just destroy things. My accent is pretty hammy. I loved doing it. it seemed to me like an opportunity to be as over-the-top hammy as possible. It was really fun.”
The most interesting comments, however, came when the interview turned to the other villains in the film. Giamatti mentions that Jamie Foxx’s character is more of a foreground villain in the film, leading us to believe that the Rhino plays a minor but important role in the film aimed at establishing him as a villain for future Spider-Man movies:
“I believe there’s a lot of stage-setting for the next film. There are several villains in this movie, and some of them are more foreground and important. Jamie Foxx is and stuff. A couple of us are more hanging around the background because I think there will be a bigger deal.”
Does that mean we’ll be seeing the Sinister Six?
“I don’t actually know, but that seems to be what they’re doing,” he said. “I’m not an idiot either, but I can’t claim hard and fast knowledge of this. I won’t. I can’t because I don’t actually know, but you and I can speculate.”
Last month we brought you a look at photos from the Spider-Man 2 set which tease the inclusion of the Sinister Six:
The first Spider-Man 2 trailer is set to hit in November, while the film is looking ahead to its May 2nd, 2014 release!
