The Guardians of the Galaxy may be a new group of superheroes to fans of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, but don’t let that scare you: they’re an incredibly rich and interesting collection of characters, each with their own back stories, motivations, and lives within the comic and cinematic universes.
Marvel’s Kevin Feige recently sat down for an interview with Empire Magazine in which he detailed the characters of the film. ComingSoon.net compiled Feige’s comments into a mini character guide for the Guardians team, including the film’s two baddies, Ronan the Accuser and Thanos!
Peter Quill (Star-Lord), played by Chris Pratt:
“Peter Quill left Earth in the mid-’80s, but when we meet back up with him he’s very much a citizen of the universe.”
Rocket Racoon, played by Bradley Cooper:
“Rocket has been genetically and mechanically altered, he’s an experiment from one part of the galaxy.
Groot (no actor announced):
“Groot is a species that happens to look like trees look, and is quite communicative if you can understand the different inflections in the way he says, ‘I am Groot.'”
Draxx the Destroyer, played by Dave Bautista:
“Drax has one goal and one goal only, which is to kill Ronan because of a past tragedy.”
Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana:
“When we meet Gamora, she’s a bad guy working with Ronan and Nebula and Korath and, by extension, for Thanos. Gamora doesn’t necessarily like doing that anymore, and tries to find a new path for herself. But she has such a reputation as the deadliest woman in the galaxy that people aren’t greeting her with open arms.”
On the film’s “baddies”, Ronan the Accuser and Thanos:
“Ronan The Accuser is very much the main bad guy. And Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in ‘Guardians,’ for sure. Certainly you’ll get more than the one turn-around-and-smirk. You’ll get much more than that.”
Lots of news has hit the web this week surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy. Rumors surrounding Bradley Cooper playing Rocket Racoon were finally confirmed earlier today, and Vin Diesel is rumored to be doing motion capture work for Groot. Actor Chris Pratt also discussed how production is coming along as well as what fans can expect in terms of the balance between drama and humor in the ambitious Marvel project.
