Disney’s futuristic ‘Tomorrowland’ filming begins shooting, gains an official synopsis

disney-tomorrowland-movieDisney’s previously-announced Tomorrowland film, loosely based off of the Disney attraction, has finally entered production ahead of its 2014 release! In a press release distributed this morning, Disney announced that Brad Bird has begun filming in Vancouver, Canada, alongside actors George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Britt Robertson, Raffef Cassidy, and Thomas Robinson.

Disney also released the first official synopsis for the film which, while brief, gives a good idea of what to expect from the scifi movie:

Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as “Tomorrowland.”

A previously-released Tomorrowland synopsis describes the “bright, optimistic teen” as “a high school girl with an unconventional understanding of technology [who]is launched on a journey to reclaim her future”, which sheds more light on the story’s direction. We’re not sure how much of an impact, if any, the Tomorrowland attraction will have on the actual plot of the film.

Little else is known about the film, but production photos should begin hitting the web now that the veil of secrecy has been lifted from production.

Disney’s Tomorrowland is set to hit theaters on December 12th, 2014!
