With new rumors floating around concerning the Sequel Trilogy (as always) it’s exciting to have official news of any kind coming out of LucasFilm. Today, we learned of a brand new animated series called Rebels premiering Fall 2014.
The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV — an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.
After all the upheaval of the past few months with the cancellation of Clone Wars and the layoffs and all, this almost seems to have been pulled together too fast. Obviously, I’m happy to get behind anything involving the words “more Star Wars” and this is one of my favorite eras, but I feel like it would have been better to wait until after the new trilogy has been planned out a bit more. All the Star Wars fans are bracing for a massive continuity upheaval, and if they have to turn around and retcon a new show after a year, or they have to scramble to alter story lines to fit what they’re hearing from J.J. we’re going to be even grumpier.
However, that’s the cynic in me talking. The optimist has already latched on to the idea that this might mean more Mara Jade.
