Ender’s Game, the film adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s scifi novel of the same name, is chugging along in post-production, which means that publicity and promotion for the film is now being thrown into overdrive in anticipation of its November release. We recently got our first glimpse at Ender Wiggen, the film’s main character, as he stares out of a window on his space battleship. We’re now being given a first look at Mazer Rackham, the story’s half-Maori war hero, ahead of next week’s trailer debut!
Mazer Rackham, played by actor Ben Kingsley, is a general from the Second Invasion renowned for winning the war for Earth. Following the invasion, he was tasked with training a new general to lead the Third Invasion. In the film, Rackham will be Ender Wiggen’s trainer and mentor.
Kingsley grew incredibly fond of his character’s story and appearance while filming the film. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said:
“In the script, which I think is beautifully written, what come across is the authority and mystery. There’s quite a lot said about him in the story before you see him — by the recruits and by his fellow officers — and that’s useful as far as preparations.
“Every gesture in the tattoo carries family history, family struggles – it’s your past. I was so enthralled. He’s in quite a contained, stylized uniform but then this wonderful face tells his warrior history.”
Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the Ender’s Game adaptation, has announced that they will release the first teaser trailer for the film on May 7th.
Prior to the release of the Mazer Rackham still, two stills and one film poster have been released. The stills feature Colonel Graff and Ender Wiggen, while the film poster shows Ender staring into space:
The film is directed by Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), who also co-wrote the film’s script. It stars Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones) as Colonel Hyrum Graff, Ben Kingsley (Schindler’s List) as Mazer Rackham, Asa Butterfield (Hugo) as Ender Wiggen, and Abigail Breslin (Zombieland) as Valentine Wiggen.
Ender’s Game is set to hit theaters on November 1st, 2013!
