There are three new books we want Timothy Zahn to write.
Ever since the sale to Disney, readers of the Star Wars Expanded Universe books have been eagerly waiting for news of what the new management would mean for the novels. Del Rey’s contract with Lucasfilm is up sometime between 2014 and 2015, but there has been no word whether or not Disney will renew it. All the books currently announced release between 2013 and 2014, and the big sale seems not to have affected them.
So many questions remain unanswered since we have no idea how the new movies will fit into the existing EU canon, but this first rumor of plans for books seems hopeful. First, it suggests that new books might even be a possibility. Second, the nod is going to Timothy Zahn, prolific scific writer in and out of the Star Wars universe. Zahn wrote the first of the major EU novel in 1991, and Heir to the Empire was so successful it has been credited with reviving interest in Star Wars and paving the way for the prequel trilogy as well as the many, many books that followed. All of Zahn’s books are considered to be core cannon for the EU and asking him to write the first of the new novels seems like a very intelligent move as it will probably bridge some potential gaps between long term fans and this new era of films. And if you really read into this poor little one sentence, a trilogy suggests that these might even been novelizations of the new movies, and, again, having Zahn author those would go a long way toward encouraging interest from fans who are skeptical about the new films.
