Today at the Grand Slam Sci-Fi Show, actor John Noble addressed the rumors that he would be playing a villain in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII. At this time, he hasn’t been approached by Lucasfilm, Disney, or J.J. Abrams with an offer, but the veteran actor admitted he would be interested. Well known for his roles as Denethor in the Lord of the Rings movies and as Dr. Walter Bishop on the TV series Fringe, Noble has proven to be an amazingly versatile actor. Yet a reader of the Star Wars Expanded Universe books can’t help but wonder: if Noble was given a part in the new Star War and assuming that the new movies don’t choose to ignore the EU entirely, what role could he possibly be playing?
Nearly all the rumors pegged him as playing a villain and some even went so far as to claim Noble would be donning the mantel of Sith Lord. Obviously, Noble is far too old to play Darth Caedus, but he seems a good fit for either Gavar Khai or High Lord Sarasu Taalon from the Fate of the Jedi novels. And it is probable that the rumors about his casting sprang up thanks to his uncanny likeness to official pictures of Grand Admiral Thrawn from Timothy Zahn’s trilogy. However, since word on streets is that the new movies won’t be based on any existing stories, it seems unlikely that Noble would be portraying any known villain even he got an offer.
Personally, I’m holding out hope that he might be cast as older Corran Horn. How about you? Would you like to see John Noble cross over from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars? And if so, who do you picture him playing?
