‘Parks and Rec’ actor Chris Pratt cast for leading role in Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

guardians-of-the-galaxy-movie-marvelDeadline is reporting that Marvel has finally found its lead man for Guardians of the Galaxy in Chris Pratt, known for his roles in Parks and Rec, Zero Dark Thirty, and Moneyball. The hunt has been on to find the best face for the funny-yet-serious Marvel scifi superhero to spearhead their latest foray into new Marvel movie territory… and Pratt seems to have beaten out all of his competition.

chris-pratt-star-lord-guardians-of-the-galaxyPratt will be playing Peter Quill, also known as “Star-Lord”:

Better known as Star-Lord, Quill is the son of a human mother and alien father. A charming troublemaker who serves as an interplanetary policeman, Quill leads a rag-tag group of superheroes (Drax the Destroyer, a raccoon named Rocket and a sword-wielding woman named Gamora) in an effort to protect the solar system from an evil alien race.

Guardians of the Galaxy is an interesting film choice for the Marvel movie line-up. While all of the Marvel films certainly bend reality, most have been rooted in basic humanity, requiring just a bit of stretching the imagination to picture the events actually happening. Guardians, however, is pretty out there (literally): the Guardians of the Galaxy team line-up includes both a raccoon and a talking tree and takes place entirely in space. It should prove to be a fresh twist to Marvel’s Earth-centric releases.

Pratt is the first cast member announced for the film, which is set to hit theaters in August of 2014. Now that the leading role has been filled, it’s likely we’ll see a barrage of casting announcements as the studio looks to head into production. James Gunn (Movie 43) has been chosen to direct.
