‘Revenge’ star Emily VanCamp cast as Sharon Carter in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

emily-vancamp-sharon-carter-captain-america-the-winter-soldierRumors have been swirling for quite a while around which actress would be cast for the role of Sharon Carter (Agent 13, a member of S.H.I.E.L.D.) in Captain America 2 and today, Deadline is reporting that Revenge actress Emily VanCamp will play the role.

Sharon Carter is the niece of Captain America’s love interest from the first film, Peggy Carter. Her inclusion in the film indicates that Marvel will be looking to explore more of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s backstory, which is backed up by the film’s synopsis, which explains that Captain America is struggling to uncover the many secrets Nick Fury has kept from him. Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in Captain America, will not have a role in the sequel. Will her niece be Steve Rogers’ newest love interest?

VanCamp has a long history in acting, capped off by her recent success as the lead actor in ABC’s hit series Revenge, which tells the story of a young woman looking to avenge the wrongful conviction and death of her father. VanCamp beat out quite the list of potential actresses for the role, including Felicity Jones, Allison Brie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anna Kendrick, Emelia Clarke, Jessica Findlay Brown, Teresa Palmer and Imogen Poots.

What do you think of the decision? Captain America: The Winter Solider begins filming this spring and is set for an April 2014 release.
