“Xbox TV” set-top box rumored to be progressing, debut pre-holiday 2013

Rumor has it that Microsoft is developing a set-top box that provides access to all your entertainment needs and is made as a low-cost alternative to its full console.

Dubbed, “Xbox TV,” supports “casual” games and will run on Windows 8, with an “always-on” chipset that will allow for quick boot-up and reloading of programs.  Xbox TV would be an attempt to broaden the scale on its products and make them available on a range of devices, including the Microsoft Surface, SmartGlass (for iOS) and smartphones.  It is expected to be revealed before the holidays next year.

Microsoft doesn’t say much regarding the rumor but does provide the following statement:

“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”

If I read that correctly, it definitely sounds like a “maybe” kind of statement.
