Last season on The Vampire Diaries, the audience was left with the cliffhanger of knowing that Elena had been turned into a vampire. That was clearly the thought on the audiences’ minds when entering the panel. Julie Plec (executive producer and writer) describes how these changes in Elena will affect the character and the show, as well as a few spoilers on the original family of vampires that the audience has come to love. In the panel was another executive producer Kevin Williamson. Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Michael Trevino, and Zach Roerig from the cast joined the panel as well.
The fourth season of The Vampire Diaries feels new and fresh, because all the characters are evolving, and now Elena is a vampire. It’s a huge development that many have been wondering when it was going to happen in the show, and the writers felt like it was the right time. Of course, this will change the show’s dynamics as Elena learns how to use and control these new powers, and how she will react to becoming something she never wanted to be. Nina Dobrev said that it is challenging to add another facet of an already complicated set of characters. She now has Catherine, Elena, and a vampire Elena.
As for the love triangle, Plec says that she roots for both teams and can’t choose one – much like Elena herself. The triangle will continue, but Ian Somerholder said that Damon is finished trying to be a nice guy. Somerhalder went on to say, “I [Damon] did everything you wanted me to do and it didn’t work and I’m a jerk and if you don’t like it you can go — yourself!” – much to the crowd’s delight.
Nina Dobrev did say Elena has to lean on both brothers to survive her transformation. She has to learn from them both during her change from human to vampire. She has to learn to live with turning into something that was never her desire to do so.
The panel was full of the normal and always entertaining Paul and Ian humor. The audience did get a spoiler or two. Ester and the originals are expanded on in season 4. Where Ester got her witchcraft knowledge will be a large part of the upcoming season as well.
The Vampire Diaries DVD comes out September 11 and season 4 comes on October 11, 2012 on the CW at 8/7c.
