Assassin’s Creed has definitely made its mark in the gaming industry over the past five years. Hitting its spree with Assassin’s Creed 2 and the following titles, the story of Ezio Auditore as well as the orifinal protagonist, Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, Ubisoft has definitely done something right – and heading in the right direction with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed 3.
A year ago, Ubidoft put their resources into launching Ubisoft Motion Pictures in an attempt to bring the company’s games to film, television and other digital goodies. According to a report, Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class andPrometheus) has been cast as the lead in Ubisoft Motion Picture’s future Assassin’s Creed film.
Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures, told Variety that Michael Fassbender was at the top of their list to be cast in the yet-unnamed role.
“Michael Fassbender was our first choice” to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero. Michael is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”
The executives over at Ubisoft, who originally tried to work out a deal with Sony to bring the games to the silver screen, are now developing their film independently in an attempt to maintain a firm grasp on creative control. However, it is still possible that Sony could distribute the project, considering they have already registered many Assassin’s Creed movie domains – but Baronnett said those talks will not take place until director and writer have been named.
“We’re open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalized. Whatever the financial model, Ubisoft Motion Pictures will limit its risk investment.”
So that leaves us with a final question: who exactly will Fassbender play? Baronnet claims that he will play the franchise’s iconic assassin. But when you consider that Assassin’s Creed now has three hooded heroes, it may be difficult to choose between Altaïr, Ezio, or Connor, not to mention Desmond, even.
