Brandon Sanderson Set to Release his First YA Trilogy in 2013!

Huge news, Brandon Sanderson fans!

Random House Children’s Books announced today that they have acquired the rights to Brandon Sanderson’s first-ever YA series!

Here’s what the press-release revealed:

Delacorte Press has acquired the first YA series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Mistborn trilogy, Brandon Sanderson, it was announced today by Beverly Horowitz, VP & Publisher. Executive Editor Krista Marino acquired for Delacorte from Eddie Schneider of JABberwocky Literary Agency at auction, and will edit the planned trilogy.

Delacorte will publish the first novel, STEELHEART, in North America in Fall 2013 with simultaneous publication as an ebook.

“Sanderson has quickly risen to the top of the fantasy genre.” said Horowitz. “We are thrilled to be the home of this talented author’s first YA project, and know that his millions of dedicated fans will devour STEELHEART.”

Here’s the summary of the book:

Steelheart possesses the strength of 10 men and can control the elements. It is said no bullet can harm him, no sword can split his skin, no explosion can burn him. Nobody fights back . . . nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, the Reckoners spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then taking them out. He’s seen Steelheart bleed. STEELHEART takes an action-heavy plot, layers in complexity, and delivers twists and a breathtaking conclusion, as David and the Reckoners try to undo the dystopia the Epics have created.

As if this wasn’t enough, there’s even more good news for Sanderson:

According to Sanderson’s agent Eddie Schneider, STEELHEART has entered preliminary negotiations for a major Hollywood deal.

    My family loves Brandon Sanderson! Can’t wait to see what he writes next. Also looking forward to the next installment of Way of Kings. The first in that series definitely hooked me hard. Best wishes that all goes well and speedily with the edits on final Wheel of Time book.

    Huge Sanderson fan. Mistborn was one of my all-time favorites series, and Way of Kings looks like it’s going to be an amazing series. I’ve been hearing for a while now that Brandon will be writing a sequel trilogy for Mistborn after writing the standalone novel “Alloy of Law.” “Steelheart” sounds like just that, but nowhere have I seen it mentioned that it is in the same universe. Clarification? Thoughts?

      I think if it was a follow-up series to one he’d already written that would have been mentioned in the press release, and I didn’t see anything along those lines. So maybe it is a new series. If we find out more though I’ll be sure to post it!

         The reason I say this is because Brandon has been talking about this new Mistborn series set in modern times for years. And Steelheart sounds a lot like something found in the Mistborn series. Anyway, can’t wait to hear more about it. :)

    Of course Sanderson could successfully jump into YA fiction.  Does anybody remember his hilarious Alcatraz Smedry series?
