Chicago Comic-Con Marvel News Summary – New Series, Staff Changes, and an Iron Man 3 Update

Marvel, the event machines that they are, have made announcement after announcement this weekend at the Chicago Comic-Con. Let’s divide and conquer the news…______________________________________________________________________________________

New Series

Gambit –

To the pleasure of many, a teaser image was released last week hinting at an all new solo series featuring one of the most charismatically “charged” of the X-Men. Now we know that the series will be written by James Asmus with artist Clay Mann at his side. According to Marvel news, Asmus sees Gambit’s character as one that stands out even in the most crowded of fields.

Gambit has his hands full at the moment being one of the lead instructors at Wolverine’s school for the young mutant community and a member of the X-Men Legacy team. But Gambit can’t but look for danger and morally gray area to walk right into, and therefore finds himself a project doing what he does best, thieving.

“I can tell you that I’m very interested in exploring what it is to be a thief in a world as complex as the Marvel Universe,” said Asmus. “Heist movies are awesome and all, but when your heist can involve aliens, magic, alternate dimensions, superpowers, evil gods, or basically anything you can think of, you can really take the well-won thief story to some new and exciting places …

Gear up for exotic locales, sudden surprises, sexy tension, and a wide range of allies and antagonists—old, new good and evil—who aren’t always on the side you expect,” continues Asmus. “By centering the book on something as open and flexible as thievery, I have the freedom and ability to work in almost any character, setting or idea that [gets]me excited.”

 Hawkeye –

He’s the  new “in” Avenger, making his way through all the titles this year. As proof of his success, Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye) will be getting his own solo title beginning in August. Like Gambit’s new title, this was also teased last week, though the tease had left a lot more to the imagination.

The creative team working on this book will be the tried and true Matt Fraction and with artist David Aja (The Immortal Iron Fist). Here they will pit Hawkeye against the crimes of the streets. The stuff that often goes under the noses of the ever-busy Avengers.

Fraction had this to say about the upcoming endeavor during an interview with Newsarama: “The idea of dropping this damaged idealist and reformed con turned inadvertent SOO PER HEE RO into the middle of a world of drug gangs, human slavery, shadow economies, homelessness, criminal bankruptcies, personal ruin, and all the other below-the-fold scams and scandals that screw up life every day for people like you and me was just too good not to want to write.”

The series will also provide a big role for Young Avengers Hawkeye, Kate Bishop.

Marvel Ultimate Comics Event:  Divided We Fall

Divided We Fall is a landmark event for Marvel. It is the first line-wide event in the Ultimate universe following last year’s relaunch. The event will focus on three primary characters – Kitty Pryde, Captain America, and Miles Morales. The project is led by writers Brian Wood (Ultimate Comics X-Men), Sam Humphries (Ultimate Comics Ultimates) and Brian Michael Bendis (Ultimate Comics Spider-Man). The first happenings will begin in July with Ultimate Comics Ultimates #13 and Ultimate Comics X-Men #14 and last through September.

The Ultimate universe is known to turn the characters we know and love on their heads with daring plot turns and giant upheavals that go beyond the rules and conventions of the primary marvel universe. This event is to uphold those expectations. So far we know there will be a new/old villain and the Ultimate heroes will find themselves going toe to toe with S.H.I.E.L.D. The event will have influence on all three of its host hosting books, but in very different ways.

Sana Amanat confided to the news site Newsarama that, “The name of the event says a lot about how things are going to be shaken up — or shaken down in this case since you can infer some destruction will be involved. But we’ll finally be dealing with a lot of unresolved problems — the cancers of society that run itself amok will be confronted. These are things the Ultimate Universe has been facing for awhile — the mutant issue, the unchecked power of the super rich and the super human. It’s no telling what the fallout will be because there’s so much at stake, and because the problems themselves are so relatable in the real world as well.”

Therefore, even though a focus will be had on Pryde, Cap, and Morales, expect the ripples to be felt across the Ultimate universe and all of its characters.

Everything Burns

Two giants come together for this one: Matt Fraction and Kieron Gillen. They bring with them the tales of The Mighty Thor and Journey Into Mystery’s Kid Loki. Everything Burns is a seven-part crossover (plus two epilogue issues) between these two series.

There is war in the nine realms. War that, Gillen has sworn, to be a capital-E “Epic.”

The beginnings of battle will happen in August with The Mighty Thor #18 and Journey Into Mystery #542. Artists Alan Davis and Camine Di Giandomenico will be the artists creating the story along with the writers.

Follow this event through September and October with the following issues: The Mighty Thor #19, Journey Into Mystery #643, The Mighty Thor #20, Journey Into Mystery #644 and the two epilogue issues Journey Into Mystery #645 and The Mighty Thor #22.

Staff Changes

Ryan Stegman (Scarlet Spider) – As of August issue #609, Stegman will take over the art on the Fantastic Four

Khoi Pham (Chaos War) – As of July Issue #7, Pham will be doing the art on Scarlet Spider

Jamie McKelvie (Uncanny X-Men: The Heroic Age) As of July issue #8, will be taking over for Terry Dodson doing the art on Defenders.

Also look out for Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi coming together once again beginning in Wolverine #310 in July . Sabertooth is back. Considering these were the guys who last killed him off, the story has been put in their hands to explain just how that happened.

Iron Man 3 to be Co-Produced in China

This announcement was actually released today, not over the weekend – but as we are on a Marvel News roll, let’s just throw it in.

The Walt Disney Company China, Marvel Studios and DMG Entertainment today announced the intention to co-produce IRON MAN 3 in China. Under the arrangement, DMG Entertainment will make an investment in the production of IRON MAN 3, manage the Chinese co-production process, and jointly produce the film in China. The Chinese portion of IRON MAN 3’s production will run through DMG Entertainment in coordination with Marvel Studios’ production and creative teams. DMG will also distribute IRON MAN 3 in China in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company China.

IRON MAN 3 is produced by Kevin Feige and executive produced by Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Louis D’Esposito, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard and Dan Mintz. The film is being directed by Shane Black who is working on the script with Drew Pearce. The film releases in the United States on May 3, 2013, and is being distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in all territories worldwide other than in China (which is being distributed by DMG Entertainment) and Germany/Austria (which is being distributed by the Tele München Group).

“The popularity of the Marvel franchise globally creates a huge opportunity to deliver fans yet another action packed film,” said Stanley Cheung, Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company, Greater China. “The co-production of IRON MAN 3 in China is testimony to the importance of this audience to Disney and the local industry capability to deliver a blockbuster title,” he added.

“We look forward to working alongside DMG to bring IRON MAN to the Chinese marketplace in a significant way. We are confident that Marvel’s stories will continue to be enjoyed by Chinese audiences, and adding a local flavor, and working with our new local partner, will enhance the appeal and relevance of our characters in China’s fast-growing film marketplace” said Rob Steffens, General Manager of Operations and Finance for Marvel Studios.

“Our collaboration with Disney and Marvel marks a milestone in the global entertainment landscape, as this signifies the first multi-billion dollar franchise to be produced between Hollywood and China,” said Dan Mintz, CEO of DMG Entertainment. “The IRON MAN franchise has been a major success worldwide, and we look forward to pushing the series to new heights with IRON MAN 3. The movie will further build upon its compelling storyline, and feature the hottest A-list stars, and spectacular action, which will resonate well both globally and in China, the second largest box office market in the world.”

The first installment of IRON MAN lifted off with high-speed, high-flying action when jet-setting industrialist Tony Stark survives an unexpected attack and escapes by building a high-tech robotic suit of armor. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man. Straight from the pages of the legendary comic book, Iron Man is a hero who is built—not born—to be unlike any other and made US$581 million at the global box office when released in 2008. Based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero, IRON MAN 2 continued the story of the 2008 summer box office blockbuster IRON MAN, and made US$624 million at the global box office when released in 2010 Now, IRON MAN 3 continues the story with a new chapter that will deliver more heart-pounding action than ever before. Marvel Studios’ IRON MAN 3 will find Tony Stark with his back against the wall, facing his most fearsome foes yet.

Shooting is expected to commence in May in the United States and begin location filming in China in late summer 2012.
