PERCY JACKSON 2 Movie Casting & Directing Updates!

More additions have been added to the cast for Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, the second movie-from-a-book in the Percy Jackson franchise.

The newest addition is a change-up in casting. Pierce Brosnan is being replaced by Anthony Head to play Percy’s teacher Chiron. Head is best known as his role as Giles in the wildly popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series, which ran from 1997-2003. Fans of the old show and these books, what are your thoughts on this new casting?

Other news is that Nathon Fillian is being cast as the god Hermes. I am so excited by this, as I adore him (Firefly and Dr.Horrible, anyone?), and Hermes is one of my favorite side characters in the books.

There’s been a director change-up as well: Chris Columbus has been replaced by Thor Freudenthal to direct the sequel. The first two movies that popped up under his name was Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Hotel for Dogs, so he has experience with movies for kids. Hopefully it doesn’t feel too young though, as the books cater to both young and old. Let’s also hope Thor is up to staying true to the awesomeness that is Rick Riordan’s series and honors it well in this second film.

Good news for those who like consistency in their sequels though, because even though Pierce is gone, Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson and Jake Abel are returning as Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Luke, respectively. I hated Alexandra as Annabeth, but the others were great, so hopefully this won’t be a complete let-down.

The Sea of Monsters is currently set to release in 2013.

I love that the new director’s name is Thor. How fitting.

Yeah, that made me chuckle too :)

    • Brady

I think the only way it would be more ironic is if his name was Zues.

  • Kelsey

    Mini-Buffy reunion, YAY!

  • Gavin

As if the first movie wasn’t bad enough…

    • Sarahjy10

      The first movie was amazing!!!!!

      • Hades_Is_Awesome

        I’m guessing you didn’t read the Book’s???

  • Michelle

Normally I hate it when an actor replaces someone else in a sequel, but in this case, I’m super excited! I adore Anthony Head! And Nathan Fillion! Now I’m actually excited for the sequel when only a few days I couldn’t care one way or another. And you’re not the only one who didn’t like Annabeth in the first one.

  • DragonsAreAwesome

Ugghh.  I cringe at the thought of the first movie.  Don’t know if they will be able to pull together something remotely similar to the book for this sequel.  Hopefully….doubtfully….

I wonder how this one will work out seeing as it pretty much revolves around characters and events they left out of the first movie >.> also I really don’t like logan lermen something about the way he walks makes me want to punch him.

OK, how can this story work? A major
subplot is there because he’s less than
    16. Now that PJ is over 18, how will this
    work?

    • http://www.lytherus.com/ Lauren Zurchin

A lot of actors play roles where they’re younger. Take Daniel Radcliffe, he was older than 17 in the last movie!

I know, but by the time the last PJ movie comes out, the actor will be in his mid twenties.

        • Me Myself

And the fact that he’s 12 in this book is pretty important. not to mention they left out Kronos

      • Alyx

Yes, but the difference of 20-21 and 17 is far less noticable than 16-18 and 12.

    • Sarahjy10

They can easily change the prophecy and I don’t think he was over eighteen in the movie.

      • Hades_Is_Awesome

He wasn’t over 18 he was guessed as 16-17

  • Someone

Stop freaking out over plot mess ups from the first one- they’re easy fixes! they can bring luke back and percy can start to have those weird dreams with kronos and figure out thats how luke is alive, and clarisse can easliy come in since she wasnt important in the first book. as for the actors, if you read the books the way they act sometimes is the way older kids act…and plus can you honestly see a 12 year old running across the US saving the world? this is why it was easy for HP: nothing major happens in the first two that isn’t unrealistic.

just my opinions here; hope people will consider it!(oh and as for ares casting pick someone good-him and hermes are the only ones in this one!)

Yeah, I didn’t like annabeth, she’s supposed to be blonde, gray eyes, details are a big part of how I feel.

    • Sarahjy10

You guys are being mean.  Yeah i know Annabeth in the movie didnt fit the book description but she did a really good job in the movie and she was amazing.  Dont say you dont like her just because she doesnt look the same as the book said she should.  Grover doesnt either.

  • Percy<3

I’m glad they changed Chiron, he wasnt that great of a actor, and annabeth is BLOND not brown. get it right. (Perecy has a bad tast of girls)
Red all the books in 2 weeks. 1st movie wasnt that great, but 2nd must be better… I have been dying to be an actress 4ever!!!!!

  • guest

why is the cast the same? Percy is supposed to be 12 in this book, Logan Lerman is 19! How is that right? Also the first movie was horrendous!!!! Everyone cast in that movie was not right for the part, especially Percy, Annabeth, and Grover!

  • Keira_marsh

I am a huge fan, and I tried to love the movie. I really did. I screamed out loud when I first saw the comercial (I was watching ABC Family) and bought a mini calander to mark down the days. Then, after the movie (I saw it the first day) I wanted to cry….. So much was wrong, like the actors and, well, the ending and entire plot maybe a change of director will help

    • <3PercyJackson100

feel the same way. they’re the wrong age. they’re not even teenagers yet, they’re only 12. in the movie, they look about 16! still, it was okay.

      Watch the deleted scenes.

  • http://www.jamesgallagher.co.uk/Nicol/ Nicol James Halcrow

the first film is a let down as the majority of the plot was changed such as: in the book he was given Persephone’s pearls by a water spirit and in the film they made them hunt for them they also added in the hydra in the Parthenon monument/museum in Nashville and they didn’t meet ares in the film which is a drag nor did they have kronos hades in the book didn’t  want a war of the gods and in the film he does they also didnt say that he got expelled from Yancy academy. but anyway why did the replace Pierce with Anthony as Pierce suits the role just great.

  • artermis78377

i love his books, but the movie……………. so mutch was rong there was a lot of things missing i mean i now the movie cant go on forever like the harry potter series but they could have made the carectors look the same annabeth BROWN hair reallyi would have been good for the roll my friends say is annabrth was real she would look like me

  • anna gorsuch

I loved Alexandra as annabeth!!! I personly dont like director and cast changes and thought the first movie was amazing i bought it on dvd and watched it over and over again i cant wait for the next one!!!

  • lewstherin

The movie was pretty good and since I read the second book after watching the movie the plot can easily be changed to fit what they missed in the first movie. But they should definetely change logan lerman.

  • percy jackson lover 4vr

truthfully the movie was all over the place they arent supposed to get blue bubble thingys and ares is supposed to have the lightning blot NOT LUKE and their not supposed to find out about luke and luke and percy arent supposed to fight that was not part of the books i mean yeah sure u could change a couple of things like grover being black thats fine even though it kinda got on my nerves brandon t jackson did really good and plus u need someone to be funny but seriously ALEXANDRA DODDARIO NEEDS TO BE BLOND AND MORE GIRLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
