Michael Bay wins “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, is already taking the “mutant” out… to be replaced with “alien”?

Rumors have been swirling for months over the supposed live-action franchise reboot of 80s cult-favorite, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. At the recent Nickelodeon annual “upfront presentation”, director Michael Bay was on hand to talk his involvement in the project as well as plot changes and more in store for our favorite four turtles. And we’ll give you a hint: hardcore fans won’t be pleased.

It appears as though Michael Bay may have alien fever, as one of the first major changes announced by the explosive-loving Transformer director hit die-hard fans hard: the baby turtles who stumbled into a radioactive sewer, only to be mutated into the butt-kicking mutant ninja turtles we know and love, are a thing of the past. Instead, here’s what Bay had to say:

“These turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely loveable.”

What else is in store for the TMNT team? We’ll have to wait and see, as Bay had little else to say (perhaps realizing that his first attempt at plot explanation was going too far!). With the movie now in pre-development, it’s safe to say that new information will start flowing… and perhaps that information will include a change of heart from Bay (deciding to abandon his alien-loving plans for the franchise). We’ll keep you up to date on the future of Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day, 2013.

What are your thoughts on Michael Bay’s involvement in the film reboot? Do you like the origins change or should they have left well enough alone?
