On February 5, 2012, Bill Hinzman, who played the role of The Cemetery Zombie in George A Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, died after a long battle against cancer. He died at the age of 75 in his home in Pennsylvania. Hinzman’s film career started behind the camera as an assistant cameraman, until George Romero asked him to star as the first zombie seen in Romero’s groundbreaking film, Night of the Living Dead. In the film, he was the slouching zombie who initially menaces Judith O’Dea.
Hinzman went on to star in additional Romero movies like 1973’s The Crazies and also went back to working behind the camera again. This time he was directing and acting. His directorial credits include The Majorettes and Flesheater. Flesheater, while not a perfect movie, was Hinzman’s own contribution to the zombie genre.
