Marjorie Liu to Write Astonishing X-Men

Beginning with issue #48, Marjorie Liu will be taking over the Astonishing X-Men series. This is great news for X-23 fans (who just had their series cancelled). Liu will be working with the creative team of Mike Perkins (artist), editor Nick Lowe, and Assistant Editor Jeanine Schaefer.

Junior Sales Administrator James Viscardi kicked things off by turning it over to Nick Lowe, who explained how Liu’s “Astonishing” run got off the ground. ” Marjorie’s been aching to get some X-Men team action,” said Lowe, referencing that Liu had been a fan of the old “X-Men” cartoon. – Comic Book Resources

Now the important question – who is going to be on the team and which side of the Regenesis is the team going to fall? This team is going to be one of Wolverine’s baby’s, keeping on his side of the alliances. He will lead it, but Lowe reports that he is “far from being the heart of the book.” The rest of the team will be of an interestingly new makeup: Warbird, Northstar, Gambit, Iceman, Cecelia Reyes, and Karma. This book will be giving some page time to some characters who have been shoved on the back burner during Regenesis events. X-23, unfortunately, will not be in this team book, though. Liu had wanted to include her, but could not due to Wolverine’s policy of refusing to permit the children to fight (and technically she is still considered a student and a teenage “kid”).

“I’m particularly looking forward to tackling Iceman, because he’s such a visual character that we can utilize,” said Perkins. Perkins stated that he’s really enjoyed how Jason Aaron has been using the character in the new Wolverine and the X-Men series.

Liu, on the other hand, is excited for the changes that this means for some of the other characters – Northstar will be moving back to New York. He is also moving in with his steady boyfriend Kyle. As for Gambit and Cecelia, expect the tension to keep growing between these two. Who knows what will happen.

The first arc of villains will center on the Marauders. Liu stated, “They have a history of wreaking havoc in the Marvel Universe … From my point of view, I thought this was the perfect time to bring them on. Nothing is going to be exactly what it seems, but the Marauders are going to be a big part of it.” And Perkins added that the Marauders will be bringing “visual dynamite to the piece.”
