Legendary film and television producer Gale Anne Hurd (of Terminator, Aliens, and Walking Dead fame) is currently shopping a new television project: a series based on Annie Jacobsen’s NYT Best-selling book, Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base.
Details on the show are scarce, as to be expected, but the book is a critical look at the history of Area 51 and its many conspiracies. For those of you not in the know, here’s how Wikipedia summarizes Area 51:
The facility is not a conventional airbase, as frontline operational units are not normally deployed there. It instead appears to be used for highly classified military/defense Special Access Programs (SAP), which are unacknowledged publicly by the government, military personnel, and defense contractors. Its mission may be to support the development, testing, and training phases for new aircraft weapons systems or research projects. Once these projects have been approved by the United States Air Force or other agencies such as the CIA, and are ready to be announced to the public, operations of the aircraft are then moved to a normal air force base. The intense secrecy surrounding the base, the very existence of which the U.S. government did not even acknowledge until July 14, 2003, has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories and a central component to unidentified flying object (UFO) folklore.
It’s unknown whether or not the show will focus on the alien conspiracy theories or more on the “known facts” about Area 51, including its involvement in military research and construction. Scifi is big on television right now, and given Hurd’s experience with the genre, it’s safe to say that the show will take the alien-driven conspiracy story approach. Here’s what we know about the show’s plot (from Deadline):
It will follow two men working on the base who are thrust into danger when they uncover secrets that the government will protect at any cost.
The pilot will be written by Karl Gajdusek and will also act as a show-runner and executive producer. No news on when this may be sold, if ever, but expect for it to hit the shopping phase shortly! We’ll keep you updated on any developments.
