Video Game Releases – November

6

November is here and let me start by saying that this will be an absolutely fantastic month for gamers.  Some huge titles are making their highly anticipated debut.  If you are an avid gamer, you better make yourself comfortable because you will be busy for the rest of the year. The only question is, which game will you focus on first?

GOLDENEYE 007 RELOADED

The story is set some time after the events of Quantum of Solace. James Bond (007) and Alec Trevelyan (006) are on a mission infiltrating a chemical weapons facility in Arkhangelsk, Russia, which is believed to be the source of weapons used by a terrorist cell to target British embassies around the world. The mission goes awry when Trevelyan is caught and apparently shot by General Ourumov. Bond escapes by detonating explosives he had placed throughout the facility before stealing a motorcycle and chasing a plane over the edge of a cliff, fleeing Arkhangelsk.

While GoldenEye 007 is a re-imagining of the film, the game does have noticeable differences. Levels have been altered to reflect the game’s modified story. According to Craig Harris of IGN, “GoldenEye still retains the basics of GoldenEye‘s story, but retells it in a way that makes sense with Daniel Craig’s interpretation of James Bond.” Likewise, the game features modern game elements to coincide with other modern first person shooters, such as destructible environments and online multiplayer.

SONIC GENERATIONS

As Sonic celebrates his birthday with his friends, a mysterious new enemy appears, sucking everyone through various ‘time holes’ and scattering them across different places in Sonic’s history. As Sonic searches for his friends, he ends up meeting his old self, Classic Sonic. Both Modern and Classic Sonic decide to collaborate and race through their history in order to save their friends and fix the time stream.

UNCHARTED 3: DRAKE’S DECEPTION

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective, with the player in control of Nathan Drake. Drake will have a large number of different animation sets, enabling him to react according to his surroundings. Drake is physically adept and is able to jump, sprint, climb, swim, scale narrow ledges, wall-faces to get between points, and perform other acrobatic actions. Drake can now take on opponents in more ways than before: hand-to-hand combat with multiple opponents, contextual melee attacks, and new stealth options. Uncharted 3 also features expanded and diverse traversal moves with deep gunplay. Drake can be equipped with up to two firearms – one single-handed and one two-handed – and a limited supply of grenades. Drake can pick up weapons, automatically replacing the existing weapon he was using, and additional ammunition from downed enemies.

CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 3

Like its predecessors, Modern Warfare 3 is a first-person shooter video game. It will run at 60 frames per second, minimum. Activision confirmed at Gamescom 2011, that Modern Warfare 3 on the PC will have dedicated servers support. The player assumes the role of various characters during the single-player campaign, changing perspectives throughout the progression of the story. Each level is a mission that features a series of objectives that are displayed on the heads up display, which marks the direction and distance towards and from such objectives. Damage to the player is shown by blood shown on the screen. The player’s health regenerates as time passes. Tasks vary in their requirements, having the player arrive at a particular checkpoint, eliminate enemies in a specified location, stand their ground to defend an objective, or plant explosive charges on an enemy installation. The player will be accompanied by troops who cannot be issued orders.

THE ELDER SCROLLS V: SKYRIM

Skyrim is not a direct sequel to Oblivion, but a new chapter in the Elder Scrolls series, set 200 years after the events of Oblivion. In the preamble to Skyrim, the Empire began ceding territory to the Elven nations it once ruled, because there was no heir to the Emperor’s throne. The Blades had no one to defend, and gradually died, were murdered, or secluded themselves from the rest of the world. After the king of Skyrim was assassinated, a civil war broke out amongst the native Nord race – the majority being those who wished for Skyrim to secede from the Empire, and the rest being those who wished for Skyrim to stay in the Empire.

As with previous Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim begins with the player character as an unknown prisoner, on the way to their own execution. The player eventually learns that Skyrim’s civil war is last in a sequence of prophetic events foretold by the Elder Scrolls, which also foretell of the return of Alduin, the Nordic god of destruction. Taking the form of a gigantic dragon, Alduin is prophesied to consume the world with his servants, the Jills (a race of black dragons). The player character is the last Dovahkiin (Dragonborn), a dragon hunter anointed by the gods to help fend off the threat Alduin poses to Skyrim and Tamriel. Aiding the player is Esbern (voiced by Max von Sydow), one of the last Blades.

ASSASSIN’S CREED: REVELATIONS

The game will feature all three of the series’ major characters so far: Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Altaïr ibn La-Ahad and Desmond Miles. It will take Ezio to Istanbul in 1511 AD, consisting of four districts: Constantin, Beyazid, Imperial, and Galata; Cappadocia during the rise of the Ottoman Empire, part of which will be a completely underground city populated solely by Templars; and Masyaf, which holds the old Assassins’ stronghold (featured in the first Assassin’s Creed game) to which Ezio travels at the beginning of the game. He discovers Altaïr has sealed within the fortress an ancient artifact that is said to be a powerful weapon which could end the Templar and Assassin war forever, and has hidden the keys in Constantinople. Ezio uses relics of the first civilization that hold memories of Altaïr to relive Altaïr’s experiences, during which players will control Altaïr.

The game will also continue Desmond’s story in the modern day, following the events of Brotherhood, where he will be trapped in the Animus, in comatose state, in which he has found a safe mode known as the Black Room. In the Black Room, Desmond must find a key memory that links him with Altaïr and Ezio to reintegrate his splintered subconscious and regain consciousness. While in game Ezio will meet a variety of historical characters, including Manuel Palaiologos, an heir to the now lost Byzantine Empire, Byzantine Templars who will be lurking in the shadows of Constantinople, Prince Suleiman, a man who will one day become one of the Ottoman Empire’s greatest Sultans and his uncle, Prince Ahmet.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: SKYWARD SWORD

In the chronology of the series, Skyward Sword is a prequel to Ocarina of Time. The incarnation of protagonist Link that appears in the game was born and raised in Skyloft, a group of islands floating above the clouds. Leading an ordinary life there, Link discovers the Skyward Sword one day, which leads him to another, previously unknown land beneath that is ruled by evil forces. Using the sword to travel back and forth between sky and land, the mystery of why the two worlds became separated is gradually revealed to Link. The Skyward Sword becomes the Master Sword at some point in the game, and assumes the form of a female figure while giving Link advice. Producer Eiji Aonuma has stated the game’s plot to be comparable to a school drama. Unlike in previous series installments, Zelda is not a princess in Skyward Sword, but a childhood friend of Link. Throughout the course of the game, Zelda disappears and Link has to find her. He is opposed on his quest by the Demon Lord Ghirahim, a mysterious and powerful figure who rules the surface world, who wishes to kidnap Zelda for unknown purposes. Skyward Sword connects to the story of Ocarina of Time, and elaborates on the reason for Ganondorf’s appearance.

SAINTS ROW: THE THIRD

Having defeated the rival gangs of Stilwater at the end of Saints Row 2 and overthrown the influence of the Ultor Corporation, the Saints have turned into national superstars, and they have their own energy drink, clothing line, and fanbase. They target a bank, attempting to airlift the vault out of it, but the alarm alerts the Stilwater PD and the Saints are incarcerated. In prison, they learn that the bank they tried to rob was owned by a huge international crime organization called The Syndicate, led by Phillipe Loren. After bribing the police, the Syndicate capture the Saints’ leader, Johnny Gat, and Shaundi to try and negotiate a business plan with them, aboard Loren’s private jet. While in-flight, Loren tells them they will be allowed to live if they turn over two-thirds of their territory in Stilwater. The leader of the Saints rejects this offer, and a gunfight breaks out, with the Saint’s leader and Shaundi escaping from the jet while Johnny Gat holds back their enemies to buy them time. It is unknown if Johnny Gat survives or not.
