Johnny Depp is all over the place lately. Seriously, how many movies can that guy star in?! Today brought another movie announcement for the megastar actor, as Universal announced that Depp will be producing and starring in an upcoming motion picture following the life of one of the world’s most beloved children story writers, Dr. Suess — as Dr. Suess!
Straight from The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the news:
Illumination Entertainment and Infinitum Nihil are developing a live-action movie about the life of classic children’s author and illustrator Dr. Seuss (aka Theodor Geisel). Depp will produce the project with the potential to star as Seuss, and Universal Pictures will distribute. Keith Bunin (In Treatment) has been hired to write the screenplay.
Their choice makes sense; Depp is a quirky, talented actor known for and gifted at playing interesting characters with bizarre personalities. Biopics can be rather boring (though there are also some incredible ones), and an actor like Depp will not only bring a boring screenplay alive — but he’ll sell tickets. This guy is a huge box office draw, and it looks like Universal may be banking on that to lure in moviegoers who don’t usually buy tickets to this sort of flick.
Dr. Suess, or Theodor Geisel, as an incredible man with a legacy which won’t be dying any time soon. Do you think that Johnny Depp will be able to properly portray this children’s book icon?
