Video Game Releases – October

Another big month for us gamers!  Of course, it is to be expected as the year gets closer to the Holiday season.  The big titles are slowly hitting the shelves and gamers everywhere are just dying with excitement.  Take a look at what October is bringing to the table:

The world is populated by human survivors of the impact, who have come together to form settlements around oases and other practical or habitable locations, including racetracks. These fragile homes are diligently defended by the inhabitants against bandits and mutants, which are divided into various gangs and organizations of their own. The player emerges into this setting after being preserved inside an underground shelter called an Ark. The Arks are the direct result of the Eden Project, a massive international undertaking in which hundreds of Arks (cryogenic pods) were sealed under the surface of the Earth with twelve people inside each. Each passenger possessed a special ability or trait that, combined with those of the other members, would help them rebuild society. The Eden Project, however, was far less successful than hoped.  Add this game to your collection on October 4th for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360.

Set in 2014, SSgt Blackburn leads a five-man squad on a mission to locate, find and safely return a US squad investigating a possible chemical weapons site, whose last known position was a market controlled by a hostile militia. After engaging in several gun battles, Blackburn and his squad are caught in a massive earthquake whose epicenter is in Iran. Later, Miller takes part in a tank assault upon an enemy rocket battery, before preparing to advance on what appears to be a burning city.  The game is set to be released on October 25, 2011 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

The story for Arkham City takes place approximately one year after the events of Arkham Asylum. Quincy Sharp, former warden of Arkham Asylum, has taken credit for stopping the Joker, and used the notoriety to become mayor of Gotham City. Arkham is still in ruins by the events in the first game and Blackgate Prison is still in ruins due to the fire and since neither place is in any condition to detain inmates, Sharp buys out a large section of Gotham’s slums and arms the perimeter with private military contractors from a group called Tyger in order to create “Arkham City”. The prisoners are brought into Arkham City and are given free rein, as long as they do not attempt escape. To oversee the city, Sharp hires psychiatrist Hugo Strange who appears to have his own secret agenda for the city. Batman maintains a vigil over the city, worried that the situation may get out of hand.  The game is being released on October 18th for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

In the year 2099, Alchemax scientist Walker Sloan seeks to gain power and fortune by traveling back in time to the present day in order to use his knowledge of future technology to found Alchemax much earlier in time. This causes the future of 2099 to change to a dystopia where Alchemax rules the world with an iron fist. Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099 is aware of the plan and finds out that Sloan’s actions are not only responsible for the changes in the timeline but will also cause the death of Peter Parker / Spider-Man at the hands of a brainwashed Anti-Venom. Miguel warns Peter of the impending danger, and both Spider-Men must work together across time to save the future and Peter Parker’s life. It is set to release on October 4th in North America and October 14th in Europe for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS.

The game takes place after the events of A Crack in Time and the Comic Book series, and follows main characters Ratchet, Clank, Captain Qwark and Doctor Nefarious, respectively the protagonist, deuteragonist, tritagonist and antagonist of the series. The game takes place when an evil plan set in motion by Nefarious to destroy his three archnemeses once and for all backfires, sending the four of them into the snare of a mysterious machine known as the Creature Collector. Now, they are forced to work together and cooperate in order to escape from the machine and get back home. Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One releases for the PlayStation 3 on October 18th.

The game will focus on dungeon crawling and the tension and fear that arise when players encounter enemies in this setting. The game is a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls (which in turn is considered a spiritual successor to the King’s Field games). Dark Souls will take place in an open world environment. Unlike Demon’s Souls, which would force the players to restart the level when they died, Dark Souls will allow players to light special Bonfires, which function as respawn locations. These bonfires also replenish health, magic, and special items like Estus Flasks – limited vials that restore player health.  The player will battle using various weapons and strategies to survive in a dark fantasy world. Online features will allow players to share the play experience without need for direct communication.  Add this game to your collection on October 4th for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
