Fans of Marvel’s “Runaways” series know that the comic giant threw the planned Runaways movie on the backburner to make more room for their team to focus on The Avengers. But what Marvel fans may not realize is that before this happened, Drew Pearce had completed a screenplay for the film and director Peter Sollett (of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) had begun preparations for filming. This means that a completed script is still lurking in the background at Marvel, waiting for the perfect time to spring into production mode for a release.
Pearce recently participated in a screenplay panel, where he discussed the possibility of a Runaways movie — and added that he would still love to see it happen (any surprise there?):
“Basically, ‘The Avengers’ came along and everything else at Marvel got put on hold for a year. But the script is there, we’re good go. It’s kind of like [being]at the airport when you’re waiting for your slot to take off with Marvel, and we’re hoping we get a slot next year. Fingers crossed. They’re very happy with it, so hopefully it happens.”
It’s interesting to see how much weight Marvel is throwing behind The Avengers, though we can’t say that we blame them. However, it would have been nice to see their award-winning Runaways series hit the big screen as well. With their busy screen schedule over the next few years, we’re not sure where a Runaways film would fit in… but it’s reassuring to know that the idea hasn’t been scrapped for good.
