When Final Fantasy X-2 was released, Square Enix made a habit of putting sequels to individual installments of the ever-so-popular Final Fantasy series. Although it got plenty of mixed reviews, Final Fantasy XIII sold millions of copies. The games ending left things open (as do most games) for further exploration of the massive world we know as Gran Pulse. So let’s be honest, it isn’t a huge surprise that Square Enix is giving us a second chapter to their latest Final Fantasy installment early in 2012.
Square Enix debuted their new trailer for Final Fantasy XIII-2 just in time for E3. Like most debut trailers, Final Fantasy XIII-2 gives us very small hints at the plots and trailers. What we do know, however, is that Lightning (the main protagonist for Final Fantasy XIII) is back… but everyone thinks she is deceased. Her damsel-in-distress sister, Serah, appears to take the stage this time – led by new leading man Noel Kriss. Together, they bash their way through various amounts of monsters in search for Lightning and will cover background elements left behind in the previous outing.
Watching the trailer will give you a brief glimpse of the Final Fantasy XIII-2 gameplay. It is still a mystery whether the newest installment will continue to use the same map design as the first, the combat is very identical. It does look like some “Quick Time Event-style” attacks and the possibilty to summon, or even tame, monsters will shake some things up. The biggest complaint fans made towards Final Fantasy XIII was the overly linear level design that took away from the RPG feel. It will be interesting to see if it is designed any differently this time around.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is set to release for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in early 2012.
